The People’s Museum of Limerick is a project from Limerick Civic Trust, at No. 2 Pery Square, Limerick. Limerick Civic Trust have a long relationship with this building, having first carried out its restoration from 1996 to 1999. The building was opened as ‘The Georgian House and Garden’ by President Mary McAleese in 1999. In 2014, it was purchased by Limerick Council and became ‘Culture House’ during Limerick’s tenure as City of Culture in 2014. Now the building has returned to the care and management of Limerick Civic Trust, and we have ambitious plans for a brand new way to bring it to life!
The Mission of Limerick Civic Trust
Limerick Civic Trust was founded in 1982, and is an independent non-profit society which is registered as a charity. We initiate and undertake projects for the improvement of Limerick’s environment, and collaborate with many different agencies, state bodies, and individuals. There are three core pillars to our work. These are conservation, environment, and education. Under the heading of conservation, we restore historic properties that have become derelict. We improve the environment in Limerick by maintaining civic spaces such as streets, graveyards, and public monuments. Lastly, we educate and create awareness of the value of Limerick’s heritage through publishing books and pamphlets, organising lectures, and running walking tours throughout the year.
